Hello, my name is Rafael Caspary Blay and I am a Computer Science and Business Administration student at the University of Southern California. Besides being interested in Data Science, I have also been a big soccer enthusiast since the day I was born. With Algolritmo, my goal is to combine those two interests, develop my analytical skills and create some applicable knowledge about soccer.
To achieve that, I will prepare several analyses using concepts from the classes I have attended together with material I learned from books such as “The Numbers Game”, “Soccernomics”, “Mathletics” and “Soccermatics”. The blog’s focus will be the tournaments played in Brazil as well as the main European leagues. However, collecting the necessary data is not always a simple and cheap task, so my studies will be primarily limited by the material available. (In case you have access to some interesting material or dataset please do not hesitate to contact me through algolritmoblog@gmail.com)
The blog posts will be usually divided into sections, where I will explain the assumptions, methodology and will analyze the results obtained by each model. I will do my best to be as clear as possible regarding mathematical and statistical concepts in order to make comprehension easier.
Of course, every model has its own qualities and limitations, and I understand that making a model that explains 100% of what happens inside the pitch would be naive and impossible. Yet, I’ll always try to show the pros and cons of each model, emphasizing its possible applications. As George Box, a British statistician, once said: “Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful”.
I hope you enjoy the material and learn something with every blog post.
Algolritmo's founder. I have a bachelor's in Computer Science and a master's in Analytics. My goal is to bring a new perspective into Brazilian football. I'm particularly interested in communicating complex ideas through simple data visualizations.
I graduated in Computer Science and Business Administration at the University of Southern California and got a masters degree in Analytics at the same institution. I have worked as a Data Science intern at companies such as Facebook, Itaú and Looqbox.
Muito sucesso Blay! Acompanharei as postagens, já tá nos favoritos aqui!
Valeu Tute!
Muito legal a iniciativa, vou acompanhar as postagens!
Obrigado Serjão!
boa sorte na nova empreitada.
Obrigado!
